Gymnastics Recruiting Video

Create a Gymnastics Recruiting Video That Gets You Noticed

Your gymnastics highlight video is your most powerful recruiting asset. Coaches rarely travel to see players in person before viewing their film — and many make their decision within the first minute. A well-made video can capture their attention and set you apart.

How Long Should It Be?

College coaches have limited time to watch highlight reels, so your video should be short, sharp and impactful.

Length

  • 5–6 minutes total

Clips

  • 20–30 high-quality clips

Structure

  • Begin with your best routines; finish with weaker ones

Must-Have Elements

Title Card (5–7 seconds):

Open your video with a simple title card to identify yourself. According to NCSA, the title card should include your name and graduation year. It’s also helpful to list:

Highlight Presentation

Follow these best practices from NCSA to help coaches evaluate your routines:

Skills to Showcase by Event

Coaches evaluate gymnasts differently depending on the apparatus. Highlight skills that demonstrate difficulty, execution and consistency. Here are key elements to feature for each event using NCAA guidelines:

Vault

  • Show two or more vaults with high start values, such as Yurchenko 1½, Yurchenko 2/1, Tsukahara ½ or Handspring Pike ½

  • Emphasise explosive speed on the run, powerful block off the table and controlled landings.

Uneven Bars

  • Include two flight elements (e.g., straddle back, overshoot, toe shoot to high bar) and at least one full‑turn pirouette.

  • Show amplitude on release moves and end with a stuck C‑ or D‑valued dismount

Balance Beam

  • Feature an acrobatic series such as back handspring to layout step‑out.

  • Showcase dance elements with 180° splits (switch leap, split jump) and a full turn.

  • End with a C‑valued or higher dismount; connecting a B dismount into a D element is also acceptable

Floor Exercise

  • Include three different tumbling passes—at least one with two saltos linked together.

  • Highlight leaps and jumps showing 180° split and amplitude.

  • Finish with a strong C‑value or higher salto dismount and demonstrate expressive choreography

Technical tips for gymnastics highlight videos

NCSA’s filming tips ensure your video looks professional and easy to evaluate:

Film multiple competitions – Use footage from several meets, especially regional or national events

Include practice clips – Show coaches new skills you’re training to indicate future potential

Use a tripod – A steady camera helps coaches see your technique clearly

Don’t zoom – Keep the same perspective throughout the routine

Mute distracting noise – If crowd noise or announcements interfere, mute the video rather than adding music

Identify the gymnast – When multiple gymnasts are visible, annotate the clip or insert a freeze frame to point yourself out

Title card and level – Always start your video with a title card listing your name and graduation year; specify your level (e.g., Level 10)

Keep it under 8 minutes – NCSA advises that gymnastics recruiting videos should not exceed eight minutes and most effective videos run 5–6 minutes

Coaches look for evidence of improvement. NCSA recommends keeping your highlight reel current because updates show you’re progressing and learning new skills.

  • After each competition season or major meet

  • When you upgrade difficulty or master new skills

  • Whenever you earn notable scores or awards

  • If you move to a new club or advance to a higher level

Each update is also a reason to reconnect with coaches and remind them of your interest.

When to Update Your Video

Why Coaches Rely on Video

Highlight videos save college coaches time and travel costs. Instead of attending every meet, they can evaluate dozens of athletes online and decide whom to watch in person. Videos also allow coaches to track improvements over time and compare gymnasts’ technical execution across events. Submitting a polished highlight reel increases your chances of making a coach’s shortlist.

Women’s gymnastics recruiting video example

To see these principles in action, watch a sample women’s gymnastics recruiting video featuring complete routines from vault, bars, beam and floor. Note how the athlete opens with a title card, identifies herself before each clip, films from a wide angle and balances competition and training footage. You can host your video on YouTube and embed it in your recruiting profile so coaches can view it easily
